Silver Club Golfing Society

A Competitive Golf Membership

Silver Club Golfing Society FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What is the Silver Club Golfing Society?

The Silver Club Golfing Society (“SCGS”) is a national golf society for people who are passionate about the game and seek the competitive challenge at every turn. With a membership that draws from across the United States and internationally, our mission is to cultivate a thriving golf society that signifies the very best in the game — where the competition is compelling, the camaraderie is vibrant, and the experiences are memorable. Above all else, SCGS provides its members the opportunity to relax and spend quality time with one another in a spirited tournament setting.

  • Where does the SCGS name come from?

Silver Club Golfing Society’s name comes from golf’s simple beginnings in 18th century Scotland:

“In 1744, the first golf club with a definite proof of origin was the Company of Gentlemen Golfers who played of Leith, now called the Honorable Company of Edinburgh Golfers, who play at Muirfield. It was that year when ‘several Gentlemen of Honour, skillful in the ancient and healthful exercise of Golf’ petitioned the Edinburgh City Council to donate a Silver club for their annual competition on the Leith Links. The winner of the competition was declared Captain of the Golf for the year, and a silver ball with the date and the Captain’s name inscribed upon it, was attached to the Silver club.”  (Scottish Golf Book by Malcolm Campbell)

  • What’s different about a competitive amateur society like SCGS?

SCGS not only arranges tournaments like an amateur tour, but we provide each player with an overall competitive experience that creates lasting bonds within our membership. Creating a society of great people who compete on high-caliber, architecturally significant golf courses is our top priority. SCGS creates memorable experiences worth returning for as opposed to playing a simple golf tournament on an average course.

  • Who runs SCGS?

SCGS was founded by Steve Scott, current PGA Professional and former #1 amateur golfer in the world. Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and insight to the SCGS after competing at the highest level for over 20 years. SCGS is also guided by two talented event management teams, the Outpost Club and MB Golf.  Using their extensive experience in conducting domestic and international tournaments, these teams work hand in hand to foster a spirited but friendly culture and identity for SCGS.

  • What kind of golfer is right for SCGS?

The ideal member is anyone who has the desire to compete in high-caliber tournaments against players of a similar skill level and who respects the history and traditions of the game. The SCGS understands there are a select few golfers that strive to compete in tournaments where they can hit shots that matter, where focus and tenacity are called up to succeed – and a skill level above what is called for in the enjoyment of playing a casual round with friends.

  • Everyone participates in scratch flights at SCGS events.
  • Members can play in our net Scotch Division.
  • At the end of the day, the golf must be fun.
  • How many events are on the SCGS calendar?

In 2021, SCGS will conduct four or five major, multi-day events as well as a championship final for those who qualify through their play throughout the year. Additionally, the Society will host 8-12 one-day events near large, metropolitan areas that will be open to both SCGS members and select guests.

  • Will events have different flights for varying levels of player?

Yes, we will have different flights to accommodate various playing levels, and all play will be at scratch within flights, along with our net Scotch Division. A maximum handicap index of 9.9 is used for Scotch play. A USGA handicap Index is required for participation in SCGS events. Flights are determined by dividing registered fields, but a sample division is below:

DIVISIONS FOR PLAY INDEX REQUIRED
Jones Division             Plus handicap to 1.0
Evans Division            1.1 to 2.9
Ouimet Division         3.0 to 6.0
Travis Division            6.1 to 9.9

  • What type of events are on the SCGS calendar?

There will be a variety of formats used throughout the year including individual stroke play, team best ball, match play, and Ryder Cup style events.

  • What is the initiation fee and how much are annual dues?

One of the SCGS’s core principles is to set initiation and dues at a reasonable level. The Society’s Membership Director or sponsoring member of the prospective member can provide this information.

  • When do members pay their dues?

Dues are billed annually in January.

  • How do I register and pay for tournaments and what are the fees?

Tournament registration is available through our website or on our mobile iPhone or Android apps. Upon membership registration, SCGS members will receive login information to access their account. Tournament fees will be paid via credit card at registration. Tournament fees will vary based on venue and duration of event.

  • Are golf carts or caddies used during tournaments?

Although we prefer that players support the traditions of golf and walk with caddies, we understand that it is not always possible. Players will always have the ability to utilize either carts or caddies when available and according to the host venue’s rules and regulations.

  • Are guests allowed to compete in SCGS tournaments?

Select guests will be allowed to compete in SCGS one-day events. Additionally, depending on field size, venue and format, guests may be allowed to compete in our multi-day main events with a member sponsor.

  • How are SCGS tournament rules administered?

All SCGS events conform to USGA rules and will consist of various event formats played at scratch within each flight. SCGS competitors are flighted based on their USGA Handicap Index for each event. Scotch Division play will be based on some percentage of course index, using the lower of a player’s current index or 9.9. For a complete listing of tournament rules and all SCGS flights, please refer to the SCGS Player Handbook.

  • Can women join the SCGS and compete in events?

Yes. Anyone who is a member or guest can enter to compete in SCGS events. Yardages and tees are adjusted based on the field, gender, and age.

  • Must I be an existing private club member to join SCGS?

A club affiliation is not necessary in order to be invited, though the majority of SCGS members already are private club members.

  • Is membership transferable?

No. Membership is in the name of one person and is non-transferable.
