Ben Crenshaw is the only golfer to make our list of the Top 50 Amateur Golfers of All Time without a major amateur victory to his credit. His record though is very compelling. His victories include the 1968 International Jaycee Junior Golf Tournament, the 1971 NCAA Championship, 1971 Eastern Amateur, 1971 Southern Amateur, the 1972 NCAA Championship (tie with Tom Kite, pictured left below), 1972 Eastern Amateur, 1972 Porter Cup, 1972 Trans-Mississippi Amateur, the 1973 NCAA Championship, 1973 Western Amateur, 1973 Sunnehanna Amateur, 1973 Southern Amateur and the 1973 Northeast Amateur. He was also the runner up to Vinny Giles in the 1972 US Amateur at Charlotte Country Club. Ben credits being exposed to so many wonderful courses on the amateur circuit with sparking his love and interest in golf course architecture. This turned out to be a very good thing for the greater golf world as along with his design partner Bill Coore, Ben is responsible for designing some of the very best golf courses in the world including Sand Hills, Cabot Cliffs, Streamsong Red, Friars Head and Sand Valley.
