<p class="wp-block-paragraph"><br>Robert Gardner, a sophomore at Yale won the 1909 USGA Amateur tournament over Chandler Egan at the Chicago Golf Club. He was 19 years, 5 months, at the time of his victory the youngest champion ever. His record stood for an amazing 85 years until Tiger Woods won his first of three Amateurs at age 18 years, 8 months at the TPC at Sawgrass. Gardner made the finals of the U.S. Amateur three more times, winning in 1915 and losing in 1916 &amp; 1921. Unfortunately, he made it to two other important final matches but did not emerge victorious; the 1911 @westernamateur and the 1920 British Amateur.<br></p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Golf was not the only sport Gardner excelled at. On June 1, 1912, at an intercollegiate track and field competition in Philadelphia, he set the world pole vault record at 13 feet 1 inch (3.99 m), Gardner also was a racquets national champion. He and Howard Linn won the national doubles racquets championship in 1926 and 1929.</p>

He was a semi-finalist at 1963 British Amateur. He played on three winning WalkerCup teams (1963, 1965, 1969) and captained the 1975 team to a win. Interestingly enough, Updegraff also finished in a tie for 4th place at the 1969 Tucson Open on the PGA Tour but failed to sign his scorecard and was disqualified! We are sure he felt better after receiving the Bob Jones Award from the @USGA in 1999. <img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-144 aligncenter" src="https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n-300x169.jpg?resize=300%2C169" alt="" width="300" height="169" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n.jpg?resize=300%2C169&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n.jpg?resize=768%2C432&amp;ssl=1 768w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n.jpg?resize=640%2C360&amp;ssl=1 640w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n.jpg?resize=100%2C56&amp;ssl=1 100w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/40584466_1060827917417282_9094700103771357184_n.jpg?w=800&amp;ssl=1 800w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" /> 2011 and 2013 WalkerCup Captain <strong>Jim Holtgrieve</strong> has had a long and distinguished amateur career and has given so much back to the game. He won the inaugural U.S. Mid Amateur in 1981, was runner up at the 1983 British Am and made it to the semis in the 1980 U.S. Am as well as being a 3 time Walker Cup competitor. <img data-recalc-dims="1" decoding="async" class="size-medium wp-image-174 aligncenter" src="https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n-300x300.jpg?resize=300%2C300" alt="" width="300" height="300" srcset="https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=300%2C300&amp;ssl=1 300w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=150%2C150&amp;ssl=1 150w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=640%2C640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=480%2C480&amp;ssl=1 480w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=100%2C100&amp;ssl=1 100w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=592%2C592&amp;ssl=1 592w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=240%2C240&amp;ssl=1 240w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?resize=50%2C50&amp;ssl=1 50w, https://i0.wp.com/silverclubgolfingsociety.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/09/41158177_1061838170649590_1120636136658567168_n.jpg?w=750&amp;ssl=1 750w" sizes="(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px" />A classic pose from <strong>O. Gordon Brewer Jr</strong>, former president at Pine Valley, arguably the world&#8217;s greatest course. As a player, he made it into a mind-boggling 42 USGA national championships, capping his competitive career with two victories in the U.S. Senior Amateur (1994, ’96). He also won five Crump Cups.</p>
